Our Cause: Trauma

Witness Justice's Team Heal Trauma is an awareness and fundraising running team created to draw attention to the pervasiveness and impact of psychological trauma.

Psychological trauma is a common, but often ignored or overlooked, experience for survivors of violence, abuse, neglect, disaster, terrorism, and war, impacting virtually all health and human service programs and services. Unaddressed trauma has enormous human, social, and economic consequences for individuals, communities, and the nation.

In September 2006 Witness Justice, in collaboration with the U.S. House Caucus on Addiction, Treatment and Recovery, hosted an issue briefing on Capitol Hill regarding the growing public health problem of psychological trauma. The briefing was sponsored by 10 national organizations and endorsed by approximately 30 more — representing a wide of range of interest areas (e.g. mental health, crime victim, veteran's affairs, child abuse, disaster preparedness, homelessness, education, and more). Team Heal Trauma is another step in our continuing effort to ensure that this issue is addressed.

Team Heal Trauma consists of three kinds of participants (18 years of age and older):

  1. Runners (Marathon and 10K)
  2. Volunteers
  3. Sponsors and Supporters

Volunteers

Volunteers are integral to our success in raising awareness. We need to have as many volunteers out along the race route as possible. By wearing our team t-shirts and passing out other promotional items and materials, volunteers will provide crucial support for our team and mission. Volunteers are not required to fundraise prior to the event, but they are encouraged to raise at least $100, as all funds raised help to further the education and advocacy work of Team Heal Trauma and Witness Justice.

Checklist for Volunteers

  • October 6, 2009 – deadline for fundraising (not required, but encouraged).
  • October 25, 2009 – Volunteer at the Marine Corps Marathon!
